CURRICULUM VITAE
Alex Toh is an award-winning arts scholar with more than 15 years of media arts creation and communications experience. His portfolio spans various areas including communications, project management, technology, instructional design, filmography, web content development and design, animation, photography, digital illustration, and brand design. He is a now a communications and project manager with a diverse, dynamic, and creative portfolio of works, as well as manifold experiences, driving compelling digital transformation and innovative communications strategy in a fast-paced international organization.
He started his winning accolades while still a polytechnic student, clinching First Prize in Inter-school Best Homepage Design Contest in 2000, organised by Singapore Press Holding’s Asiaone.com and zaobao.com. In the same year, he won First Prize in the Tertiary Category and Overall Best Animation Award as part of a team in Animation 2000 Competition organised by National Arts Council. He was selected as a finalist in Singapore Young Designers Award 2001, organised by Designers Association Singapore, Singapore Trade and Development Board and National Youth Council. In 2006, he was selected as a NOISE Apprentice, recognised as among the top young artists in Singapore, an initiative by the National Arts Council. As a teacher and mentor, he led and guided many students in winning at competitions too. Some of his students' achievements included First Prize in Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award 2006 organised by Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Third Prize in Marina Bay My Inspiration Flag Design Competition in 2009 organised by Urban Redevelopment Authority in conjunction with Singapore Design Festival, and Merit Prize in STAMP Postbox Design Competition organised by Singpost in 2010.
Alex began his career in 2004 as a designer with a creative agency where he had opportunities to work with the AXN and Animax TV channels. He then spent 7 years as a teacher in ITE where he taught various media arts and communications subjects. In the newly formed School of Design and Media in ITE, he helped to setup the Nitec in Interactive Media Design course.
In recognition of his achievements in multimedia arts and teaching, Alex was invited as a speaker at the Asia Adobe Education Leadership Forum in 2007. In the same year, he was awarded a full scholarship to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Technology and Design with Singapore University of Social Sciences (formally known as SIM University).
Alex completed the Masters of Arts in Instructional Design and Technology from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technology University of Singapore in 2017. He achieved a high GPA of 4.5. From 2015 to 2019, he also completed International Baccalaureate’s specialised certificates in guiding students in Film, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, and Service.
Alex's background in various types of media arts creations coupled with expertise in instructional design and education technology enabled him to contribute extensively to his teachings and project works. Recent years, Alex shifted his focus of arts creation to filmmaking. As films have the ability to transcend language and myriad of boundaries, and with the ever advancement of technology, he firmly believes that the craft of creating the medium should be taught as an imperative presentation and communication tool for all 21st century learners.
In 2020 and 2021, his new short film “A New Start”, emerged as Winner of Creativity Award for Short Film in A Show For A Change Film Festival 2020, Silver Award for Short Film in Wallachia International Film Festival 2020, Winner of Asian-Pacific Heritage Short Narrative in Huntington Beach Cultural Cinema Showcase 2020, Finalist Short Film in Focus International Film Festival 2020, Semi-Finalist for Best Short Film in Canadian Cinematography Awards 2020, and Honorable Mention at Los Angeles Underground Film Forum 2020. It clinched 23 Offical Selection titles at international film festivals including International Thai Film Festival 2020, Diamond Star Penang International Film Festival 2021, International Short Film Festival of India 2020, Universe Multicultural Film Festival 2020, The Film Collective 2020, and Christian Family Film Festival 2020.
